El avance de la red de carreteras a lo largo de la primera mitad del siglo XX tuvo un peso esencial en la incipiente estructuración de los espacios turísticos españoles. Este texto pretende plantear, a partir de una reflexión histórica basada en fuentes documentales, cuáles fueron las circunstancias para el establecimiento de las primeras rutas e itinerarios turísticos modernos que utilizaron como medio de transporte los vehículos particulares o los autocares. Los distintos condicionantes, técnicos, económicos, políticos y sociales, que definieron la evolución de la red circulatoria española, determinaron también el propio avance de la actividad turística, que no empezaría su pleno desarrollo hasta finales de la década de 1950.

Abstract: (Title: The role of roads in the configuration of Spanish tourist areas in the first half of the twentieth century). During the first half of the 20th century, the progress of road network improvement in Spai was directly related to structuring incipient tourist areas. Thus, in this text we have tried to define the circumstances in which the first tourist routes and itineraries were created throughout the country from the use of private vehicles and touring coaches. The objective of this analysis, based on a historic reflection and on various documentary sources, is to show the influence of the different conditioning factors: technical resources, geographical characteristics, economic and political issues and social aspects that defined Spanish road-network evolution and that, at the same time, determined the development of tourism at a pre-mass tourism stage.
